Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

"A CCOMMODATION was not avail1-3. able by train for the number of passengers who travelled by road," was the answer given by Mr. J. Callaghan, Parljamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport, to a questioner who wished to know why spectators at a Bristol football match could not have travelled by rail.

• Mr. Hollis asked how many coaches were used to take spectators from Dartford to Bristol to see a football match • on December 6. Mr. Callaghan replied that 28 coaches were hired for that purpose.

Mr. Alms also asked a question designed to show that fuel was being wasted by coaches operated on contract work.

20,000,000 MILES COVERED WITH " PRE-FABS."

AFLEET of 1,700 vehicles, run by the Ministry of Supply, will shortly log a total of 20,000,000 road-miles. Most of the machines are articulated Fordsons.

For over two years they have been engaged in transporting pre-fabricated aluminium houses, from factories to sites in all parts of the country. Many of them are conversions of ex-Service vehicles, which had covered large mileages before being taken over by the Ministry of Supply in 1945.

Speedy and efficient transport is vital to the four former aircraft factories making aluminium "pre-fabs.' Their manufacturing programmes rely entirely upon up-to-the-minute clearance of production, for, with lack of adequate storage space for so bulky a product, the slightest transport hold-up can bring output to a standstill. Despite all kinds of difficulties, however, trans!•ort delays have never occurred.

IMPORT OF MACHINERY FREE OF DUTY

UNDER Section 10 of the Finance Act, 1932, as amended, the Treasury is empowered, after consultation with the Board of Trade, to license the dutyfree importation of machinery. It is a statutory requirement that application for the issue of a licence under the section should be made before the machinery is imported.

Cases continually arise in which application is made for a Treasury licence after the consignment of machinery has reached the United Kingdom. Whatever the merits of the case for duty-free importation, it is not possible under the statutory provisions for a Treasury licence to be granted in such circumstances, says the Board of Trade.
