Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

EXPERIMENTS showed that in an -..ngine fitted with only an air filter, there were average reductions of 71i per cent, in diametrical piston wear and 76 per cent, in cylinder wear, and reductions of 68-88 per cent. in pistonring wear, said Mr. A. W. Culver, of Vokes, Ltd., in an address to the Leeds centre of the Institute of the Motor Industry, When air and oil filters were used the corresponding wear-reduction figures were: piston, .80 per cern. average; cylinder, 99 per cent. average; piston ring, always above 96 per cent. Diminution in diametrical valve-Stem wear • averaged about 56' per cent. in each case—a logical result, as one could expect the air filter, but not the oil filter, to influence the wear on this part of the power unit. Substantially the same remarks applied to the valve

guides, Mr. Culver added.

Use of the air filter alone decreased total main-bearing wear (loss in weight) by 81 per cent., piston-crown and combustion-chamber deposits by 27 per cent., and oil consumption by 53 per cent. When air and oil filters were used, the corresponding reductions were: main-bearing wear, 99.7 per cent.; piston-crown and combustion-chamber deposits, 52 per cent., and oil consumption, 75 per cent.

CONSIDER THE OVER-FIFTIES

THE British Legion is anxious to put

employers of labour in touch with the older ex-Servicemen. They comprise the age group hit baldest by present industrial conditions, yet they represent a valuable reserve of labour, particularly as sedentary workers, such as clerks, retail salesmen, travellers, etc. These men can be engaged without recourse to the Labour Exchange.

OBITUARY WE regret to report the death of MR. VI THOMAS PAGET HEADLAND, managing director of Thos. P. Headland, Ltd. He was 60 years of age.
