Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Brian Weatherley reports on the end of an era for one of the longest established tanker manufacturers in the UK.

DOVER INDUSTRIES. the US owner of Bilston, West Midlandsbased Heil Trailer International. is closing its UK assembly and moving production overseas with the reported loss of 100 jobs.

Its sales, customer engineering and recently expanded aftersales operations will be moved to a new local office. The UK market will now be supplied with trailers from the Heil Group and associated companies in Poland, the Czech Republic and Argentina.

The UK operation has a £16m turnover and its factory is one of the oldest tanker makers in the country, with a 170-year history in tanker manufacture following the purchase of Thompson Carmichael by Heil.

At a recent NEC Show, Heil exhibited a number of products including a silo tanker built in the Czech Republic by Z'VVZ.

The closure of the Bilston plant does not affect Heil Europe, the manufacturer of refuse bodies based in Dunfermline.

Heil is the leading supplier of petrol trailers to the UK; it also has a major share in the dry powder bulk tanker market. CM understands the closure has been driven by more competitive manufacturing costs abroad.

• This week Heil launched Trans-Train, a training programme recognised by the Energy Institute for bulk operators involved in the handling of petrochemicals. For more information call 01326 560400.
