• Bosses at Dutch freight giant Nedlloyd are assuring British drivers their jobs are safe despite a £90m global cost cutting programme.
The planned economies follow last week's half-year results, which show a c.41 in loss.
Road transport turnover was down 5% across Europe: most of the losses came from sea-freight operations.
Spokesman Lammerts Van Bueren says: "Cutting costs isn't the same thing as scaling down operations. We are looking at making economies, but not shut
ting clown operations or laying off drivers in Britain."
Nedlloyd operates a number of UK subsidiaries, including haulier Wim Vos and warehouse operator Nedlloyd Districentres.
The company has a major transport contract with brewer Courage and operates a 10,000m= warehouse at Milton near Abingdon.
The company is warning that haulage turnover and profit levels for the remainder of the year will be down on 1992 levels; it believes the recession is far from over.
