It is understood that Exel and UCI were originally also in the run ning. The Redhill-based Hammond Transport Group currently handles aftermarket car part deliveries from a centre in Lutterworth, Leics to around 270 UK dealers.

Toyota says it is happy with Hammond, but wants to test the market before launching what it claims will be the fastest parts supply service in Europe next year (CM17-23 June).

The successful firm will be asked to supply around 20 trucks, mainly 7.5-tonners, but ranging up to 38-tonners, running in Toyota livery Overnight deliveries to unmanned lock-ups will replace the current weekly drops, which are backed up by an overnight emergency parts service, to avoid daytime congestion.

The winner will also give a same-day delivery service of Lexus parts to 56 Toyota dealers supplying the luxury car.

Toyota had planned to shortlist four hauliers but then decided to include its sister firm Seaking of Sheerness, Kent. C TNT Contract Distribution has set up a division to concentrate on automotive distribution after winning a contract to transport Honda car parts from a plant in Swindon to assembly lines at Cowley and Longbridge.

Terry Richards will head TNT Automotive Logistics but will also retain his role as divisional general manager of TNT Aerospace.
