I was very interested to read "Watch those warning signs," by Ron Douglas.
As an ex-tipper-driver I agree with everything he mentions, and sincerely hope tipper owners and their drivers will take heed of :Ron's good advice.
I was always on the 'lookout for the warning signs regarding ram troubles, and always reported any defects on returning to base, as I have seen several accidents due to defective tipping gear.
Not all the blame for defects can be placed on bad maintenance. I found much was due to bad use of the tipping gear by tearaway drivers.
Some have tipped their loads on very uneven ground at such an angle it's been a wonder the vehicle has not overturned while tipping.
Also, when a load hasn't all run out, I have seen drivers race the engine and let the clutch in sharply to dislodge the stuck load. This could cause much damage to rams and bodies, as well as damage to the whole transmission.
I once worked for a tipper haulier who would never employ a driver who had less than five years' experience at tippers.
