James Holt is the new managing director of Humber McVeigh Transport and Humber McVeigh International Transport Services.

He moves to his new job from Stirland of Nottingham where he was director and general manager. Mr Holt has also spent six years ag' operations manager for the National Freight Corporation,.

Cotrali-Pickfords has appointed Richard Gerlach as finance director. He moves up from his present job as assistant finance officer at the NFC.

Mr Gerlach began his career with London Transport before joining NFC in 1974.

Road Haulage Association industrial relations officer Chris Dixon has been appointed to the industrial relations sub-committee of the Confederation of British Industry.

It is this committee which considers the CBI attitudes towards Government proposals and EEC directives and comments to the Government on the proposals.

Pickfords manager Howard Routledge, who caught a wages snatcher during a raid on his car after he had picked up the branch wages, was presented with the NFC Chairman's Award last week.

Mr Routledge was injured in the raid but still fought off his assailant who later appeared in court. His reward was a silver salver and a cheque presented by Sir Dan Pettit, chairman of the NFC, at Harrow office where he was manager at the time.

Since the raid, Mr Routledge has been made manager of the Bath office.

On the passenger front, Peter Collins has been appointed assistant planning research officer by London Transport.

His new responsibilities will include operational and eco nomic research within the company. Thirty-fouryear-old Mr Collins joined the operational research department in 1971.

Regional chairman of the Coach and Independent Bus Sector of the Confederation of British Passenger Transport is to be Stuart Appleby of Appleby's Coaches. The appointment follows the resignation of Chris Parker who has retired from coach operation.

Townsend Thoresen /Transport Ferry Service has made new appointments for its Lame Caimryan route.

Captain Ronald Adamson takes over as manager of the route. He moves from being relief master of the Free Enterprise IV.

At Larne, Park Wilson becomes the company's port manager with Brian McKelvey as assistant port manager (freight).

MAN has appointed Michael Heath-Wise as its new mar keting services manager. He will be responsible for all sales administration publicity and promotion on MAN and ROMAN vehicles.

He moves from his post as the company's distribution manager to take up his new post. Crane Fruehauf Trailers is to become a consultant to Crane Fruehauf Rigids.

Under the new arrangements, he will be responsible for national account customers in the public and private sector.

Norma Knape has been appointed plant manager of the Aeroquip factory at Marpie. Cheshire, and she will be responsible for the co-ordination and direction of the Yates Barco Management Group.

Mrs Knape moves up from being commercial administrator of the plant.

Kilmarnock firm Richmond Menzies Carriers has been taken over by an Ayr man, John Stevenson and his wife, Betty. Mr Stevenson is highly experienced in the haulage business, having spent the last 10 years in Eire. He took over the existing workforce and in his short time in Kilmarnock has increased the business substantially.

Obituary

James McIntyre McKelvie, who in 196( founded Ailsa Trucks Ltd, importers of Volvo commercial vehicles has died. He was 56 years old.

Jim McKelvie, when he returned from war service, transformed a modest family haulage business in Barrhead (Glasgow) into one of the largest privately owned haulage companies in Britain. It was sold to the Transport Development Group in 1965.

The next year, Ailsa Trucks Ltd, was formed, and with Jim McKelvie at the helm, it was to take Volvo trucks to leadership in the UK hgv market.

Mr McKelvie disposed of his shares in Ailsa Trucks Ltd. to AB Volvo, in 1975, although he remained on the Ailsa board until March of this year and also retained consultancy status with AB Volvo.

A pioneer of bus services in Fife, Robert S. Forrester, of Bogilly Road, Kirkcaldy, has died at the age of 80.

Mr Forrester retired in 1964 as general manager of W. Alexander and Sons, part of SBG.
