QEVERAL 6 x 4 crane-carrier chassis are currently being manufactured by Atkinson Vehicles, Ltd., Walton-le-Dale, Lanes, to the order of Ruston-Bucyrus, Ltd. The chassis are for use with a new type of crane unit, and the complete machine will be known as the 11-RB lorry-mounted transit crane.

Initial chassis are to have Perkins R6 (V) Mark 2 oil engines rated to develop 98 b.h.p. at 2,500 r.p.m. One chassis, however, is to have a Ruston and Hornsby 6YDA air-cooled oil engine which produces 110 b.h.p. at 2,200 r.p.m. This unit has already been extensively tested in a double-deck bus to prove its suitability for road vehicles generally. As a further alternative a Gardner 5LW could be fitted, The chassis has a wheelbase of 12 ft. 6 in. and the main frame members are 12-in. by 8-in. 65-lb. rolled-steel joists. The frame is heavily reinforced and cross-braced, and welding is used extensively. A David Brown S450 four-speed synchromesh gearbox is employed, and its bottom ratio of 6.5 to 1 gives a tractive effort of 7,070 lb. at maximum torque.

The double-drive bogie has Kirkstall overhead-worm axles and solid walking beams in lieu of springs. Each axle is rated at 13,000 lb., whilst the Kirkstall front axle has a rating of 10,000 lb. and has semi-elliptic springs. Air-pressure braking is employed, and Michelin 8.2520-in. XY tyres are fitted to all wheels.

Right-hand drive is provided, and the one-man half cab is of all-metal construction. A reverse-slope windscreen has been adopted, and this is of laminated safety glass.
