NAEAT products, of the Excel Co., 1V1 Ltd., are now being delivered in a refrigerated Seddon 25-cwt. van to retailers in the area bounded by Leighton Buzzard, Welwyn Garden City, Letchworth and Hemel Hempstead. Sausages and pies are made during. the afternoon before delivery and are immediately put into cold storage, from which they are loaded into the refrigerated van. The body, built by D. B. S. Coachwork, Ltd., was designed by Mr. L. J. Saunders, transport manager of the Excel Co., Ltd. Wingett-Dole plate refrigeration units, situated on the wa:ls and roof of the van, control the temperature of the interior at 30° F. A compressor is housed in the cab alongside the driver. The cab is insulated with 2 in. of Onozote.
A single rear door gives access to a central gangway, on each side of which are Duralurnin racks specially designed for easy cleaning. The vehicle will accommodate nearly 2,500 lb. of assorted stock, which is enough normally for two days' deliveries in a semi-rural area.
The vehicle cost £1,700. The effect on customers of the delivery of meat products in fresh condition, despite hot weather, is such that the original cost will be recovered much sooner thar the operators hoped.
