Operators Seek More : Extra Livestock Vehicles

A LIVESTOCK haulier told Mr, rik J. A. T. Hanlon, Northern Licensing Authority, at Keswick, last week, that he now had to make 21 journeys to earn as much as he formerly received for one journey for the Ministry of Food.

He was Mr. R. Gargett, of Nord Vue, Penruddock, who sought an additional vehicle, with a cattle container, under an A licence. An earlier application had been refused in January of this year.

Mr. Gargett had been in business for 13 years, and was in partnership with Messrs. Wilson and Wear until 1953. When the partnership was dissolved, he retained an A-licence and a Blicence vehicle, A C-licence vehicle was off the road under a prohibition notice, he said.

Since he made his previous application, his livestock business had, he said, increased. The closing down of the Penrith depot of British Road Services had stimulated his business.

British Railways objected. The hearing was adjourned until today, at Penrith.

Protest Against Allegations

. Another livestock haulier's application. was also adjourned until today after a strong protest had been made against the introduction of allegations concerning the use of. a C-licence vehicle run by the applicants, Messrs. T. Bell and Sons, Wood Street, Botcherby.

Messrs. Bell unsuccessfully applied last January for an extra A-licence vehicle for livestock. They renewed the application last May and it was adjourned until last week.

They claimed that the extra vehicle was necessary because their existing fleet of three A-licence vehicles could not meet the demands of customers since the decontrol of meat.

Mr. John Bowman, of Gaitsgill. Dalston, who operated two A-licence vehicles and had been established since 1929, objected. He said that because of an accident he was not working about the time when decontrol was introduced in July of last year. Where others

might have gained extra work, his livestock haulage takings had ,dropped by £1,000 in the second half of last year.

He also said that he had kept observation at the local mart for a C-licence vehicle of Messrs. 'Bell. Mr. T. H. Campbell Wardlaw, for the applicants, protested against the introduction, without written notice, of an allegation which might suggest a breach of the law. Mr. Hanlon upheld this submission.
