THE application of Econofreight Transport, Ltd., for an A licence for an extra tanker (91 tons unladen) for the carriage of bulk cement in Northumberland, Durham and Yorkshire, was granted at Newcastle upon Tyne on Monday by Mr. G. W. Duncan, Northern Deputy Licensing Authority. The ease had been adjourned (The Commercial Motor last week) to allow further figures to be produced.
After hearing evidence by two of the objectors, Messrs. R. Durham and Henry Peacock, Ltd., and a submission by Mr. Frank Milton, on behalf of the 31 hauliers who objected, Mr. Duncan said that, having regard to the appeal case of the Railway Executive, Road Haulage Executive and Hall and Co., Ltd., he was satisfied the vehicle was a special type within the scope of that decision.
"In view of the shortage of labour today and the need for more mechanical methods of handling, it would be wrong to refuse the application. People cannot he expected to try out these new methods if they cannot be assured that transport facilities of this special type are available," Mr. Duncan added.
SURPRISE IN MEAT CASE
I-1 A SURPRISE development in the
application by John Findlay and Co., Ltd., Dundee, for permission to carry meat in insulated vehicles from Aberdeen to England, including London (reported on page 91), caused the case to be adjourned again.
Mr. W. D. Connochie, for the applicants; produced a letter from Mr. G. R. Colvin, chief transport officer of the Fatstock Marketing Corporation, relating to complaints at Smithfield about deliveries by the railways.
Mr. B. Brown, for the railways, agreed that the letter was of great significance.
