Foden’s S80 and S83 ranges were particularly popular with CV hire companies. In 1972, the marque received a priceless endorsement from a premium market player when Ryder Truck Rental focused its then-new heavy truck division on 250hp Fodens equipped with S40 steel cabs. Tom Mannix, chief engineer at Ryder, was quoted saying that Foden was the toughest truck in Britain.
Grangemouth-based Transfleet Truck Rental ordered 33 Cumminspowered Foden S83 tractor units in 1977. They were supplied by local Scottish dealership, the Beaverbank Motor Co of Broxburn, West Lothian. At that time, a 26-year-old Foden bus, used by the Motor Works Band, followed the new Transfleet convoy north and provided a stately lift home for the Sandbach delivery drivers.
