Under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005, haukers found convicted of fly-tipping will face the following:

• A fine of up to £50,000 in magistrates' courts • Unlimited fines In higher courts • Community punishment order • Up to five years in prison • Having to pay the cost of enforcement, investigation and cleaning up the mess Landfill tax There are two rates of landfill tax: £2/tonne for 'inactive waste such as rocks and soil, and a £24/tonne standard rate (up from £21 last year). The government has pledged to increase this rate by at least £3/ tonne per year to £35/tonne.
