Laboratory by Castle Rock Consultants in Nottingham is being used to nab vehicles contravening a truck ban.
The prototype robot uses a pair of 35mm cameras and piezoelectric sensors which are sunk in the carriageway. The cameras are placed at each end of the road on which the lorry ban operates.
As a truck enters the banned zone, a photo is taken of it with the time and date. A second photo is taken as it leaves the forbidden zone. The photos are very clear and make it easy to read the number plate and often the name of the operator.
Tests have been carded out in Welham Green, Herts; now the system is due to go into production and will be sold to local authorities.
