AIn a test carried out in a Bedford KD
5-tonner fitted with Bedford 300 Cu. in. diesel engine, four-speed gearbox and 5.43 to 1 rear axle the normal road consumption when cruising at up to 40 mph was just under 17 mpg. At an average speed of 45-75 mph on the motorway a consumption of 15.3 mpg was obtained. But in other circumstances fuel consumption could vary substantially according to the area in which the vehicle was operated and, of course, the mechanical and body specifications and condition of the vehicle.
