Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Two MotoMeter commercial vehicle tyre pressure gauges were sent to me recently from HeIla Automobile Equipment Ltd., of Hanworth Lane, Chertsey, Surrey, for equipment-in-use tests. I have had both of these with me for a month now and have found them to be accurate each time they were used.

One of the gauges shows the pressure read on a stamped sleeve. This particular unit I found rather too slippery to hold, making it difficult to obtain a correct seal on the tyre valve. However, in 50 or 60 checks the readings did not differ to any significant degree.

The clock gauge proved to be completely accurate. The clock itself is calibrated both in p.s.i. and in cm/2 and it incorporates a ratchet to hold the pointer at the recorded pressure. The bulbous end of this unit makes sealing to the tyre valve simple and a slightly different angle at which the adaptor is fitted prevents it fouling the wheel rim.

A wider range of pressures is catered for by the clock gauge than the sleeve-type unit. The clock unit reads from 40 to 140 p.s.i. while the sleeve gauge reads from 50 to 130 p.s.i.

Refuse trailer

Known as the Dinotrailer, a trailer version of the Dinosaur container refuse vehicle has been produced by the Powell Duffryn Engineering Co. Ltd. The hydraulic system of the lever-arm lifting gear is operated by the driver by means of cab-located controls.

Shape formulator

A device that enables time to be saved in restoring profiles in body repair work has been developed by Temco Tools Ltd. Known as the Temco formulator it comprises a frame in which 93 aluminium sensing needles are slideably mounted. The needles can be locked in position by a thumbscrew:they are supplied by the British Aluminium Co. Ltd.

When pressed against an object of either male or female form, the ends of the needles assume the shape of the surface. Individual needles are adjustable to allow datum points to be made; coloured and calibrated needles are available.

Design applications include template forming from design drawings, hand shaping of preliminary models and the making of drawing records from final models.

Made by: Temco Tools Ltd., No. 2 Factory Unit, Churchill Industrial Estate, Lancing, Sussex.

Lightweight petrol engine

Weighing only 130Ib, a new Coventry Victor 20 bhp petrol engine has successfully completed a 1,000-hour endurance test by the Military Engineering Experimental Establishment. This included running the engine for 250 hours in the tropical chamber at 125 deg F (52deg C) and Arctic starting trials at —26deg F (-32cleg C). The unit is designated the K2.

The engine is a horizontally-opposed twincylinder, four-stroke air-cooled unit and its maximum power is developed at 4,000 rpm. An over-square bore/stroke ratio has enabled large inlet and exhaust valves to be employed and the width of the engine to be reduced to a minimum. Bore and stroke of the engine are 3in. and 2iin. respectively while the output per litre is 36.2 bhp. A bath-tub type of combustion chamber is combined with a compression ratio of 7 to 1. The finned cylinder barrels are of cast aluminium.

A four-cylinder version of the unit to be known as the K4 is being developed that will have an output of 40 bhp at 4,000 rpm. Made by: The Coventry Victor Motor Co. Ltd., Willenhall Lane, Binley, Coventry.

Truck/van tyre

The Goodyear company has introduced a 16in. tyre which is designed for delivery vehicles and is known as the Nylon Super Tred.

Of nylon cross-ply construction the tyre has scuff bands on each side to give protection to the side walls. An increased mileage life is provided by an increase in tread pattern depth of one-third the normal depth. The bladed tread pattern is designed to give improved traction and braking properties. It is claimed that the cross-ply construction gives lighter steering.

Flaring tool

J. W. Pickavant and Co. Ltd. has put on the market the JWP230M Double-Lap Flaring Tool. This is similar to the previous model but has been redesigned to speed up and simplifY the flaring operation. It is claimed that the tool handles more easily and considerably reduces the time taken to complete a flare.

Although the new body is different, all punches and dies remain unchanged so there is not expected to be any supply problem.

For those who have the original JWP230 tool and wish to convert their kits, a modification set consisting of a body and screw assembly and die inserter is offered.

Marketed by: J. W. Pickavant and Co. Ltd., Whitmore Street, Birmingham 18.

Flameproofmg

The Stacatruc company is offering flameproofed Clark DCY40 and DCY50 fork-lift trucks. These trucks have capacities of 4,000lb and 5,000lb respectively.

All electrical and associated equipment is eliminated. The electric starter is replaced by an hydraulic starter: mechanical type oilpressure and water-temperature gauges are employed in place of electrical gauges: a Pilot starter replaces an electrical preheating plug, low temperature starts being facilitated by an inflammable liquid being sprayed into the intake: the electric horn is replaced by a pneumatic horn: a spark-proof muffler is fitted to the exhaust pipe.

Container loading

A range of four fork-lift trucks, known as the Low Silhouette-EC, has been announced by the Stacatruc company, which is adapted to loading and unloading inside containers. The trucks have capacities of 2,0001b, 2,5001b, 3,000lb and 4,000lb at 24in. load centres.

The height of the seat from the ground when compressed is 40in., while the height of the driver's overhead guard is 83in, A range of uprights is available and includes the Hi-Lo 130in. unit and a 189in. full-free-lift triplestage upright. A device giving audible warning can be set to limit lift inside containers or to give full lift when the machine is operating normally.
