NAMED the Fire Chief, a new fire appliance based on an Albion Chieftain Super Six chassis is being marketed by Carmichael and Sons (Worcester) Ltd. The engine is a Leyland 0.400 125b.h.p. unit in place of the 0.370 normally used. A road speed of 50 m.p.h. and acceleration fully laden from rest to 40m.p.h. in approximately 32 sec. are claimed.
Primarily intended as a first attendance unit, the vehicle incorporates a cab with accommodation for the driver and fiveman crew, and a 900 g.p.m. pump with facilities for taking water from a hydrant, open water or the vehicle's own 150-gal. first aid tank. Two 180-ft. hose reels are provided and other equipment includes a 50-ft. Merryweather steel escape, 35-ft. and 15-ft. extension ladders, warning bells and siren, searchlight and spotlight, portable pumping unit and radio equipment.
