THE second group scheme initiated by producers in Scotland for the bulk collection of milk from farms will come into operation shortly when road tankers will call at 12 Angus farms where tanks have been installed, to deliver milk to depots at Dundee and Brechin.

The first scheme was started in May last year, when supplies from seven Drumnnore farms were collected by tanker. The Kirkcudbright scheme sponsored by the Scottish Milk Marketing Board is working steadily. Producers have purchased the tanks originally installed by the Board on the 24 farms involved.

ELECTRIC LOADER ON F.M.C. COMMER VAN

A COMMER 25-cwt. van which the

Fatstock Marketing Corporation, Ltd., operate from their new depot in Lincoln features an electrically operated loading device. Most loaders fitted to F.M.C. vehicles are hydraulically operated, but are being converted to electric because of police objections to the engines of stationary vehicles being run when used to drive the pump. With the absence of exhaust fumes, electric operation is also more hygienic. Heavyduty batteries are used.

• The Commer has bodywork by R. A. Neaverson, Ltd., Abbey Lane, Leicester, and apart from the electric motor the loading gear resembles this company's manually operated type.

NEW GEARBOX FOR MACKS

ANEW 10-speed gearbox has been introduced by Mack Trucks Inc., U.S.A., which incorporates a five-speed main section, and a two-speed compound at the rear, controlled preseleetively by a small trigger on the main gear lever.

Available in three sizes, the unit is designed so that each ratio step in the main section can be divided midway by using the compound, in which the ratio changes are effected by air power and synchronized by baulk rings and multiple-disc clutches.

In certain respects the new gearbox is similar to the Fuller 10-speed gearbox used on* the E.R.F. 66R Rolls-Royceengined tractor.

NEW POLICE POWERS

GIVING the police powers to remove a vehicle from the road if it is causing an obstruction, the Removal of Vehicles (England and Wales) Regulations, 1957 (and a similar order for Scotland) come into effect on May I. as indicated last week by the Minister of Transport (The Commercial itiotbr. April 19). Vehicles taken off the road by the police must be placed in safe custody. Copies of the Regulations are obtainable from the Stationery Office price 3d.
