nURING last summer, a series of tests

of engines using gas oil as fuel was carried out at the laboratory of the technical committee of the French Automobile Club. The engines, which were divided into four groups, were submitted to six daily running tests of 12 hours' duration, in addition to various other tests.

The panel of experts has now issued its report and awards in respect of seven engines entered in the second, third and fourth categories, from which it appears that only two survived the tests, these being a Renault in the second class and a Unic, made under the Daimler-Benz licence, in the third category. Both were 12-cylindered four-stroke outfits. The details of the two successful engines and their test results are shown in the accompanying table:—
