By Joanna Bourke DESPITE FEARS that rising fuel prices are crippling the industry, operators are seemingly defying the credit crunch. Most hauliers are coping with increased overheads without having to seek extra financial help.

According to CM's Michelin business monitor, 95% of hauliers quizzed had seen their overheads

rise during 2008, but 94% have enough working capital to avoid having to seek extra finance.

Managing director of logistics company Mini Clipper Peter Masters says: "The flow of opportunities is not as vibrant as it was this time last year, but if we can get through without making a loss, we will be OK.” Paul Arthurton, owner of Transport, insists profits have not dropped, but he did not predict future financial growth. "We are remaining static, only some are very fortunate; the market is still extremely poor."

Arthurton represented the 59% who increased drivers' pay during 2008, but added it was in line with inflation and necessary to keep the better quality of staff.
