We've been banging the green drum lately, but with environmental matters climbing relentlessly up the corporate agenda, it's time to take some practical steps with our online checklist.
Words: Brian Weatherley One of the biggest responses we get from small-to-medium-size operators when CM writes about environmental issues is: -It's all very well telling us the problems, but what's the best way to solve them?"
And they have a fair point...
Most large fleets employ a manager who is dedicated to environmental matters (often alongside a health and safety remit). But for smaller fleet operators, it tends to come under the remit of the owner or managing director.
However, regardless of your fleet size, it's impossible to reduce your environmental footprint if you don't know how big it is in the first place.
So CM has teamed up with Transfrigoroute UK, the controlledtemperature operator trade association to offer an environmental audit/checklist for operators to score their green credentials and draw up an action plan for any improvements needed.
materials, Is there shrink-wrap blowing across the yard? Broken pallets stacked next to the fence? Full bins with workshop waste? If they don't hinder your everyday operations, it's easy to ignore them. But as well as being an eyesore, the shrink-wrap can get tangled in the wheel of a forklift truck and cause serious problems. Likewise, the fitters that listen to a radio at full-blast could be causing trouble with your neighbours. Everyone in your company must realise they can make a difference.

To download the CM/Transfrigoroute checklist go to www.roadtransport.com/ greenaudit. On the rt.com homepage, you'll find a clickthrough link under the heading 'Green Audit Document'.
You can download it as a pdf or as a Word document and use it for your own business.
But being environmentally aware is an ongoing process, don't just do the audit, file it away somewhere and forget about it. Save it on your computer and repeat the exercise every three to six months to track your progress. Set ongoing targets and action plans for your business. •
