Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

IN THESE TIMES of creditcrunching gloom, I'm delighted to offer a bit of good news.

In the editor's column (CM 28 August), Brian Weatherley quite rightly raised concerns over the failure of large projects such as the Felixstowe expansion and new London Gateway Port to give adequate consideration to secure truck parking.

He also voiced doubts as to whether the private sector alone could provide the number of truckstops required to deal with the additional HGV traffic that has been predicted.

Although I agree with your sentiments, Brian, I do think the private sector can respond.

Here in the congested South East region, I'm pleased to announce that we'll be opening a brand-new truckstop — with capacity for 100 vehicles, just three miles from the Port of Dover — in mid-December.

With high land values in the area and expensive security equipment, it's a more risky investment in the South East than elsewhere.

However, with the increase in targeted theft of high-value loads, we are convinced that transport managers are willing to pay for the peace of mind provided by a secure truckstop, with good facilities for their drivers.
