CM dons its lumberjack shirt to check out two ex-forestry bargains at Cumbria Truck Centre

When foot and mouth struck the farming industry, livestock haulier William Armstrong decided it was time his business did not depend so heavily on one source. He diversified his operation away from livestock towards general haulage and in April last year became dealer principle at Cumbria Truck Centre in Carlisle.

Just about every manufacturer has a CV centre on the Kingstown Industrial Estate but what helps this independent dealership is that it is a Paden main dealer in the heartland of logging and forestry transport. With the Paccar company so strong in the double-drive market, business is consistent from timber hauliers in north-west England and south-west Scotland.

On the used side, finding a second home for double-drive tractors and rigids has proved easy, with landfill companies across the country snapping them up. Most recently, a 6x4 tractor was sold to a company in Beaconsfield.

It's not just double-drive thoughthis area has a rich history of small hauliers running tractors on general haulage from Scotland to the South-East and back. The company picks up its used vehicles on exchange deals for new Fodens and can end up with any make to sell. One of its sources for used trucks is the owner's haulage company William Armstrong (Longtown).

Sales representative Robbie Williamson says there are normally 12-15 used vehicles up for grabs on site. Cumbria Truck Centre is an Isuzu Truck dealer as well.
