Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE LEAD story in CM 18 September, about driver Ray Ford's treatment at the hands of the Italian police, shows the need for every driver to get the strength of 800,000 members of the T&G around them as protection in cases like this.

Very often merely letting a non-British police officer know you are in contact with the T&G will be enough to ensure some sort of consideration and fair treatment according to the law. If not, a telephone call as a result of use of the T&G 's 24hour seven-day-a-week telephone legal helpline, oi further appropriate action, almost certainly will.

We have to look after our own in the T&G, but we are not liberal do-gooders or a charity who can help non-members.Therefore it is important to join and ensure your contributions are up to date.

Joining details can be found on our Road Transport Branch website at: www.one888truckdr ivers.org.uk or ring me on 01273 673399. All drivers, and particularly those going abroad, need the help of an organisation that fights for drivers' needs rather than protecting employers profits. Drivers nowadays never know when you will need emergency legal help or other services;it may be too late if you leave joining till an emergency. Rachael Webb
