Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The results from a major Greater London Council consultation exercise, using 13,058 coupons and cards, testing public opinion on five main options for the future of London Transport, show massive support in the capital for a reintroduction of Fares Fair.

Of these, 10,200 are in favour of the policy — nearly 80 per cent of all votes cast.

In addition, the majority of those who want a return to Fares Fair also wish to see more Government support to help ease LT's financial burden.

Dave Wetzel, who chairs the GLC's transport committee, said: "I am delighted with these results. They provide strong confirmation of what we knew — that a Fares Fair policy is immensely popular and is a winner as far as Londoners are concerned. "It is one of the largest responses the GLC has ever had from public consultation.

"We shall now press the Transport Secretary, David Howell, to provide the right level of financial support so that we can get back to running decent public transport services which the ordinary person can afford.

"If David Howell does not hear the voice of London this time, I will give him an ear trumpet."
