• Mr H. E. Robson, Eastern LA, granted last Tuesday to R. D. Munson Ltd, of Lady Lane, Hadleigh, Suffolk, an 0 licence for 32 vehicles and 19 trailers for one year.

The public inquiry, held at Ipswich, lasted two days commencing on May 8 but interrupted by adjournment after an objection on procedure made by Mr Geoffrey Leach, QC, appearing for the applicant.

Vehicle examiner Mr R. C. Goodwin said on the first day that several GV9s had been placed on Nunson's vehicles in recent years and that maintenance and record systems needed considerable improvement. For the applicant, however, evidence was produced that indicated that adequate service facilities were readily available and an experienced workshop foreman, Mr J. Williams, had been employed since April and was installing properly organized records and maintenance systems.

Mr Leach then raised the objection that reports made by the vehicle examiner to the LA were not made available to the applicant and, therefore, justice was not being done. The LA decided in the circumstances to adjourn the case until he could seek advice on this matter. However, in a letter written in July to the applicant, the objection was refused.

When the case reopened on Tuesday, improvements already started in April had continued with the result that, whereas in February of 10 vehicles inspected nine had GV9s placed on them, a later visit in June revealed no serious defects on 16 vehicles inspected. Mr Goodwin agreed during cross-examination that present facilities and staff were just sufficient for the vehicles in possession at the moment and in the light of this, the licence was granted. Additional application for 10 vehicles and 31 trailers to be acquired during the currency of the 0 licence was, however, refused.
