• Forecasts of reductions of over 50 per cent in rural bus services and routes came quickly last week when State-owned companies were told by the NBC (CM September 18) that it was now compelled to withdraw loss-making routes unless local authorities were prepared to provide grants at an adequate level.
Speaking for the largest of the 50 subsidiary operators within the NBC, Midland Red, Mr Walter Wotnar, director and general manager, said that of the 1000 services the company ran 100 were making severe losses and a further 330 were making marginal losses; all were under review.
Crosville, Eastern Counties, Maidstone and District and London Country, all operating services that incur heavy losses, in some cases as much as 70 per cent, are likely to have to make drastic reductions, leaving thousands of commuters in rural areas, as well as some urban districts, without any public transport at all.
