• P & 0 last week made an ft m bid for Coast Lines, the UK's biggest short-sea and coastal operator with a fleet of 26 vessels, largely engaged in trade with Ireland, and a major interest in road haulage which includes a 20 per cent stake in Ferrymasters.
Coast Lines directors said they were considering the offer and would advise shareholders in due course.
P & 0 said the main object of the bid was to integrate its own road haulage operations with those of Coast Lines complementary to its increasing commit ment to containerization..
Details of the offer have been sent to the Monopolies Commission.
