A I Durham last week the Northern Cl Traffic Commissioners refused to vary the licence of a bus operator which would have permitted him to take miners to Sunderland's away matches in London. Objections came from United Automobile Services on the grounds that the fare of 32s. 6d. which Mr. Robert Humphrey of Brandon proposed to charge would " monstrously undercut " their own fare of 54s.
Mr. Humphrey said that the firm of Htimphrey Bros. had been taking Brandon miners to home and away matches of both Newcastle and Sunderland football teams for more than 30 years. but the trips were on a private hire basis. Brandon had between 400 and 500 Sunderland supporters.
Chairman of the Commissioners. Mr. J. A. T. Hanlon, said: " We would have to fix a fare in relation to United fares and would have to restrict excursions to match ticket-holders. This would take a lot of fun out of going to football matches, which includes standing in a queue and jostling with other spectators."
The Commissioners granted a variation of the Humphrey Bros. licence to include away matches not in the London area.
