A REDUCTION in the proposed rI quotas of Community haulage licences may be suggested to the Council of Ministers of the E.E.C. when they meet on October 20. The committee of Government experts which has been preparing compromise solutions on several disputed transport topics is understood to be thinking of suggesting 750 Community authorizations in the first year, 600 in the second and 450 in the third; this total of 1,800 licences for the experimental three-year initial period compares with
2,250 (750 a year) previously proposed.
Also, the plan for uniform motor vehicle taxation in all six member countries has been dropped from the programme for the first harmonization measures.
It has, however, been agreed that the forked published rates for road, rail and water transport should be introduced for an experimental period of three years— though the spread of the rate forks is undecided and on several major transport matters there is still no agreement.
