EUROPEAN delegates representing transport on own account on Tuesday welcomed the new British regulations uplifting weights and dimensions on goods vehicles and expressed the hope that further increases would be possible in the near future. The occasion was the first-ever meeting in the United Kingdom of Section 3 (representing transport on own account) of the International Road Transport Union. The delegates, who met under the chairmanship of Dr. Schober, came from Germany, Austria, Holland, Switzerland, Belgium. France and the United Kingdom. The Traders Road Transport Association acted as hosts for the meeting. An important matter discussed was the provision to be made for hired vehicles within the common transport policy currently being formulated by the European Economic Community in Brussels. Action was agreed with a view to emphasizing to the E.E.C. the need for a liberal system which would embrace both shortand long-term hire. Other matters discussed were discrimination against transport on own account in France; the international agreement (A.E.T.R.) affecting the working conditions of drivers (so far ratified by only four European countries); and the A.A.S.H.O. report on road wear caused by heavy vehicles. The delegates welcomed the growing recognition of the danger of drawing conclusions from the. A.A.S.H.O. tests, particularly in view of the differing climatic conditions in the United States and Europe, but nevertheless IRU is to continue its preparation of a comprehensive case designed to put the A.A.S.H.O. results into perspective. After the meeting the delegates were

entertained to lunch by Mr. K. C. Turner, T.R.T.A. president, who is also to be the

next president of IRU. On Wednesday, the T.R.T.A. assistant secretary, Mr. G. Turvey, conducted the delegates round the Commercial Motor Show, two days before it was opened to the public.
