J include a new safety automatic coupling; single-axle, 12-ton platform trailer fitted th the auto coupling; a 14-ton platform with SE fifth wheel coupling, and a tandem-axle :aight frame with NuWay air suspension, th a capacity 01 20 tons.
The automatic coupling is a development of 2 model manufactured. by Hands for many ars and incorporates two safety features. ie first safety device is inbuilt into the landing ar and eliminates the danger of the trailer ing dropped on to its knees whilst being upled or uncoupled. The second is an sergency brake that comes into operation soon as the coupling gear is released, either tentionally or unintentionally. The landing ar is so arranged that the trailer can be :.:ked up without the need for special equipcot should it be dropped on landing, and e emergency brake is designed to produce Z5g at the worst state of brake adjustment :d 0-5g at the best. At the worst condition of Ljustment the springs which power this brake cchanism provide a pressure of 700 p.s.i. us pressure serves two functions: it applies
e emergency brake and also tends to force
e landing gear into the landed and locked ndition much quicker than the standard pe of coupling. It is claimed by the Hands' ,gineers that the gear will lock, in the event ' a breakaway whilst travelling, before the nding wheels touch the ground. The tumble of this coupling has another safety attire in that it is 19 in. in diameter and
provides for greater stability than many of its counterparts.
The 12and 14-ton trailers are perfectl. standard types, but have been designed to cut down unladen weight. The tandem, however, has been built with an eye on the new C. and 13. Regulations and is 33 ft. long and 8 ft. 11 in. wide. The NuWay bogie is designed to accept 16 tons imposed load, and is an American design.
