Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Seddon Diesel Vehicles Ltd.

Woodstock Factory, Oldham, Lancs.

I N recent years Seddon has tended to concentrate on eight wheelers and vehicles in the higher load rating brackets although the concern has never ceased to produce 6-, 7and 8-ton capacity vehicles. Now, with its new 13:Four, Seddon is making a new challenge in the medium-weight four-wheeler market. This new model was described in the September 4 issue of The Commercial Motor. With a gross weight rating of 13 tons as a rigid four-wheeler, it gives a payload capacity of more than 9 tons. There are actually three rigid models with different wheelbase lengths and a tractive unit version also, in the latter ease the gross train weight being 18 tons.

There are many good design features about the new range, including a very clean chassis layout, and there is a good degree of rationalization between models in the range. The mechanical specificatoin is fairly rigid, in that there are few options, and this helps to give the 13:Four one of its most attractive features of relatively low price, the tractive-unit version with cab costing £1,710. Also attractive is the cab, which is a new design and offers a good degree of comfort and visibility as well as trim. Called the Supa-Cab, it is of pressed-steel construction and has entry steps forward of the front wheels.

The engine used in the 13:Four is the Perkins 6.354 in its high-rated form, producing 120 b.h.p. net' at 2,800 r.p.m. The gearbox is a David Brown unit, which is of compact layout and has been specially developed for use in the model.

An example of each one of the versions of the 13:Four is exhibited, the longest wheelbase (16-ft. 9-in.) model forming the centrepiece of the stand, this being a chassis only. The 14-ft. 8-in.-wheelbase version is shown with a body, as also is the 9-ft. 3-in.-wheelbase tipper, in the latter case with a tipper body by Pennine Coachcraft Ltd. for Redland Transport. The 8-ft.-wheelbase tractive unit is shown with a fifth-wheel coupling. '

Besides the new models, there are three other vehicles on the Seddon stand, two tractive units and an eight. wheeler. One of the tractive units is the 18/4/A370 18-tor g.t.w. model, which has a Leyland 0.370 engine, the second being a 24/4/6LX, which uses the Gardner 6LN engine and is rated for 24 tons g.t.w. The Show model is for B.R.S. The eight-wheeler is a tanker for Bulwark and this also has the 6LX engine. Gross weight rating is 24 tons and the wheelbase is 17 ft. 9 in.
