Scammell Lorries Ltd., Watford West, Watford, Herts.
MOST interesting vehicle to be shown by Scammell is IVI undoubtedly the new Townsman three-wheel tractive unit for loads of 3 tons. This will eventually supersede the 3-ton version of the Scarab and has an all-reinforcedplastics body of futuristic design and incorporating many improved driver facilities. Mechanically there are improvements to the brakes and suspension at the front wheel and the engine used is the new Leyland 0E1 60 diesel.
With the accent at the Show on tractive units, the new Scammell Handyman Mk. III, which was described in the September 11 issue of The Commercial Motor (with the
Townsman), is probably the most important exhibit. This model is designed for gross train weights of 32 tons, although versions are available for loads up to 30 tons. The Show model has a Gardner 6LX engine and is for
McKelvie and Co. Ltd. It is displayed coupled to a Scammell tandem-axle semi-trailer. The cab on the Handyman, Ill is based on the all-plastics unit designed by Michelotti, used on the Routeman H, except that it is mounted over the front wheels and loses the forward-entry.
A 17-ft.-wheelbase version of the existing Routeman II 24-ton eight-wheeler is also featured, so the two cabs can be compared. This is in the colours of Gulf Oil (Great Britain) Ltd. The Routeman has the Leyland 0.680 engine and an interesting fitting on the chassis is the Scammell Air Load Transfer device, which will be demonstrated in operation. Making its first appearance at the Earls Court Show is the Scammell Contractor, which is a normalcontrol tractor and is fitted with a Cummins NH250 engine producing 240 b.h.p. Transmission is through an eightspeed, semi-automatic gearbox and the rear bogie of the six-wheeler has an 18-ton capacity. Gross combination weight of the exhibit is 38 tons.
Completing the Scammell exhibits there is the ScarabFour four-wheel tractive unit introduced at the last Commercial Show, which has a load rating of 3 tons and is fitted with the Leyland 0E.138 diesel engine. The show vehicle is for Walker Tannery, of Bolton, Lancs.
