nNE of the four stands on which vehicles of continental manufacture can be seen, the main interest here is the LPS 1620/30 tractive unit with forward control which was introduced by Mercedes-Benz at the Frankfurt Show last year and this is its first showing in Great Britain. A road test ot the model appeared in the Jarman 24, 1964, issue of The Commercial Motor.

A feature of the design is the cab, which gives a high degree of luxury for the driver, is well fitted, and provides excellent visibility. The Mercedes-Benz OM 346, 200 b.h.p. direct-injection diesel engine is used. Worthy of inspection is the braking system, which has dual circuits for front and rear, and includes a " light-laden " valve at the rear axle which adjusts the braking effort at the wheels according to the load on the vehicle. Visitors will find interest in comparing the brakes with British designs introduced to meet the new U.K. Regulations. Gross-train-weight rating of the LPS 1620 is 32 tons and the tyre equipment is 12.0020, 14-ply.

A Mercedes-Benz model specially designed for use with vehicle-mounted concrete mixers is the LB I413/36R, which is shown as a 14-ton tipper chassis with heavy-duty springs and dampers. The model has semi-forward control and is powered by the OM 352 direct-injection diesel which has a capacity of 5.6 litres and produces 126 b.h.p. at 2,800 r.p.m. Also shown is an L405 van powered by a 1.9 litre diesel engine producing 55 b.h.p. Capacity of the van is 303 Cu. ft. and load rating is 35-40 cwt.

The final exhibit on the stand is a Unimog-S crosscountry vehicle, which has an 86 b.h.p. petrol engine and is equipped with a folding cab, front winch and other equipment.
