Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Fodens, Ltd,.

Eiworth Works, Sandwich, Cheshire.

AT the last Commercial Show, Fodens featured a matched artic using a Dyson semi-trailer; this time the concern goes one better. As well as featuring a matched outfit with a semi-trailer designed by Fodens, an interesting outfit is also shown which consists of an eight-wheel rigid with a shortened platform body and, at the rear end of the frame, a fifth-wheel turntable to which a single-axle semi-trailer is coupled. This semi-trailer was also designed by Fodens; but, as with the tandem-axle unit, it was built by Dyson. With the front-to-rear axle spread of the outfit, maximum gross train weight can be 32 tons and, in fact, the design provides for equal loads of 11 tons 5 cwt. on the eightwheeler and the semi-trailer platforms.

The matched artic featured has a, Foden 4AE6/30 fourwheel tractive unit and tandem-axle semi-trailer, which uses the two-spring bogie introduced by Foden at the last Show, in which each spring has only two leaves. The axles are standard Foden trailing axles. Gross train weight is 30 tons and the 10-ft.-wheelbase tractive unit has a kingpin mounted 2 ft. 2 in. forward of the rear axle centreline. The semi-trailer is 34 ft. long and has I-section. high-yield steel side-members which are 15.62 in. deep and have a

series of 9-in.-diameter holes in them. Whilst the eightwheeler with the semi-trailer has a Foden Mk. 7 225 b.h.p. engine, the four-axle artic has the Mk. 6 175 b.h.p. unit, although both have the Foden 12-speed gearbox. This unit is made up of a four-speed constant-mesh unit with a three-speed, air-operated, epicyclic gearbox mounted to it.

Two other vehicles are shown by Fodens, these being a 6TE6/40 left-hand-drive, six-wheel tractive unit designed for overseas use with 30-ton loads. Axle capacities are 8 tons front and 12 tons for each rear unit. The Foden Mk. 6 engine is fitted. The fourth exhibit is an 8X6/24 eight-wheeler designed for truck mixer applications, which has a gross-weight rating of 24 tons. Goodyear 9.00-20 tyres are fitted at the front axle and 18.00-19.5 Super Singles are used at the rear.
