Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Guy Motors (Europe) Ltd., Fallings Park Wolverhampton.

ADDED interest is given to the new Big J range of goods vehicles described in the September 4 issue of The Commercial Motor, which make up five of the seven chassis exhibited by Guy in that the Cummins engines fitted as standard in this range will eventually be produced by a joint company set up by Jaguar (Guy's parent) and Cummins. The five Big .1 models are the 24-ton, fourwheel tractive unit; the 30/32-ton, four-wheel tractive unit; the 16-ton gross (32-ton gross train) four-wheeler; the sixwheel, 11-ft.-wheelbase, 20-ton tipper and the 16-ft. 10-in.wheelbase, 22-ton six-wheeler. All have Cummins engines except the last one—this has a Gardner 6LX—the 24-ton tractive unit having the V6-170 and the other three the higher-rated V6-200.

The new cab, which can be tilted when the Cummins engines are employed, is fitted on each chassis. This unit offers a high standard of driving comfort and easy entry through steps ahead of the front wheels.

Another feature of the design is the braking system, which in all cases is full air-pressure with dual circuits for front and rear brakes. There is an air-assisted handbrake with triple-diaphragm chambers for the rear brakes, which are controlled by a lost-motion linkage at the handbrake lever so that only while the handbrake is actually being applied does the emergency air system operate.

Gearboxes available for the Big I include five-, sixand twelve-speed units, the last named having 'a built-in " splitter " with finger-tip control. Examples of all three can be seen amongst the Big J chassis exhibited.

Completing the Guy Stand there is an Invincible Mk, III 24-ton g.t.w. tractive unit which has a wheelbase of 8 ft. 6 in. and is fitted with a Gardner 6LX engine and David Brown 657 gearbox. There is also an Arab Mark V double-decker chassis with a Gardner 6LW engine and four-speed, semi-automatic gearbox. The Arab has a wheelbase of 18 ft. 6 in. and a low-height frame suitable fot the mounting of forward-entrance bodywork.

The 24-ton Big I tractive unit has coupled to it a tandemaxle semi-trailer built by the British Trailer Co. Ltd.
