He graduated with first class honours in engineering at Queen Mary College, London University, after Army service from 1918-1919. He gained the higher degrees of Ph.D. in 1926 and D.Sc. in 1930, and in 1958 was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. Created a C.B.E. in 1944 and a C.B. in 1953, Sir William was knighted in 1960.

Mr. C. T. Humpidge has been elected president of the Municipal Passenger Transport Association for the year 1964-5. Mr. Humpidge, who is 59, became assistant engineer to the Birmingham Tramways undertaking in 1928. then moved to Liverpool Corporation in 1935, before taking over as assistant chief engineer at Portsmouth Corporation two years later. From 1939 to 1942 he was chief engineer to Nottingham Corporation before moving to Rochdale Corporation as general manager in 1942. Mr. Humpidge became general manager with Bradford Corporation in 1951 and 10 years later took up his present post as general manager at Sheffield. He is also secretary of the Sheffield Joint Omnibus Committee.

Mr. H. Hill has been appointed service and spares manager of Pitt Trailers, Barton Stacey, Hants. He was previously works manager for many years.

The Tilling Group announces the appointment of Mr. M. T. Smith, at present chief engineer of West Yorkshire Road Car Co. Ltd., to deputy general manager of Bristol Commercial Vehicles Ltd. with effect from January 1 next. Mr. Smith, who is 39, was with Bristol Commercial vehicles as assistant experimental engineer from 1948 to 1951 before moving to the Lincolnshire Road Car company as assistant engineer until 1954. He then became chief engineer with Cumberland Motors Ltd., remaining with them until 1956 when he took up his present appointment with Wcst Yorkshire.

sen, previously assistant to the managing director of the Goodyear Tyre and Rubber Co. (Great Britain) Ltd., has been appointed deputy managing director. Mr. Thompsen has been with Goodyear-Great Britain since 1958, joining the company as treasurer. He became financial director in 1961 and took up his position as assistant to the managing director in April of this year.

Mr. Walter Lawrence has been appointed traffic superintendent of Aberdeen Corporation transport department In succession to the late Mr. Alex Main. Mr. Lawrence has snent all his working life with the department, starting as a conductor in 1930. He was a prisoner in Poland for five years during the last war, but studied while in captivity, arid when he rejoined the transport department in 1946 he passed the examination of the Institute of Transport. Mr. Lawrence, who is 51, was appointed chief traffic clerk at the end of last year.

Mr. K. C. McCarthy has been appointed to the newly created position of international development co-ordinator (automotive) of the Castro! Group. Mr. McCarthy, who is a director of Castrol Ltd., will have world-wide responsibility for co-ordinating the sales development of the Castrol Group's principal automotive lubricants markets. Mr. R. C. Powell has been appointed assistant international development coordinator in this field.

The Minister of Transport has re-appointed Mr. A. H. Grainger to he vice-chairman of the London Transport

Board until September 30, 1965. Mr. Grainger was a member of the forme! London Transport Executive from December, 1947, and deputy chairman from 1955. He was appointed vice-chairman of' the London Transport Board in November, 1962.

Mr. F. K. Roberts has been appointed I .ecds district manager of the Avon Rubber Co. Ltd. He has been with Avon as a sales representative based in Leeds since 1958.

Mr. J. T. Leech, traffic manager of Plymouth Co-operative Society for 36 years has retired. Mr. Leech joined the society in 1928 after serving an apprenticeship. He started as a motor mechanic, became vehicle inspector in 1951, then transport engineer, until finally he became head of the department in 1954.

Mr. E. N. Adlington is one of the five new members that have been elected to the committee of the Royal Automobile Club. Mr. Adlington is a director of Temple Press Limited, chairman and director of Temple Press Books Limited and chairman of A. E. Prince Ltd.

Mr. I, J. McIntosh has been appointed assistant export manager of Taskers of Andover (1932) Ltd. He was previously in the export sales department. Another Taskers appointment is that of Mr. W. D. McIntosh to the position of assistant home sales manager. He was previously in the home sales department.

Mr, C. Clymo, at present traffic manager of the Rhondda Transport Co. Ltd., has been appointed traffic manager of the Trent Motor Traction Co. Ltd. in succession to Mr. D. G. F. Rawlinson, who, as previously announced, is moving to East Midland Motor Services Ltd. as general manager. Prior to joining Rhondda Transport, Mr. Clymo was assistant traffic manager with the Trent company. Ile will take up his new appointment on a date to be agreed.

Mr. W. F. Keefer. who is vice-president (finance) and a director of Warner Electric Brake and Clutch Co.. U.S.A., has been elected to the board of Westpool, Bishop Auckland. Co. Durham.
