Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Tim first public appearances of the 1 British-built Perkins Mars gas turbine will be at the National Boat Show in London in December and at the Hanover Fair in April next year. It will, however, have a private showing next week at the Chief Fire Officers' Association and Institution of Fire Engineers' conference at Brighton, where it will be seen powering a water pump.

In the fire-pump application the Mars turbine, which weighs 98 lb. and produces 50 h.p. at 40,000 r.p.rn. on a continuous rating, powers a pump delivering 500 g.p.m. at a pressure of 100 p.s.i. The turbine, complete with all accessories, is 22 in. high, 17 in. wide and 24 in, long. The self-contained pumping unit weighs only 172 lb. It will run on

oil fuel, paraffin or low-grade petrol and its power-to-weight ratio is about a fifth of that of a modern compression-ignition engine having the same rating.

Hand or electric starting is provided for the unit. With hand starting the rated speed for commencement of combustion is reached in 20 seconds whilst the electrical equipment halves this time. The standard reduction gearbox fitted reduces the turbine speed from 40,000 r.p.m. to 4,400 rpm,.

CLEANSING DRIVERS' AWARDS

Five drivers, who could not be faulted, shared the cash awards for the first five places. Championship prize for 1959 went to Mr. E. Culloden.
