TRANSPORT SHOULD NOT PAY FOR CONCESSIONS rONCESSIONARY fares should not be borne by a transport undertaking when it was in dire distress, said Mr. J. W. Fletcher, East Midland Licensing Authority, at last Friday's hearing of Nottingham Corporation's application to abolish early-morning return fares. Concessions were a matter of council policy.

The application was opposed by bodies representing workers' interests.

A spokesman for the . corporation contended that peak-period travel with traffic all in one direction should be dearer, not cheaper. Even if the application were granted, fares would be only 69,7 per cent, higher than before the war.

The Authority deferred his decision.

PERMANENT ENGINEERING SHOW

EARLY next year, the old Birmingham Exchange is to be opened as a permanent engineering exhibition. Space will be available for about 200 stands, the charges varying from £35. £450 a year. It is not yet known whether members of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders will be permitted to exhibit, but, in any event, stands will not be let for the display of chassis or complete vehicles.

NO DECISION ON REDUNDANCY

THE Road Haulage Executive state that they have so far taken no decisions ' regarding staff redundancy that might arise under the Transport Act, 1953.

The national staff council, at their meeting last week, considered the problem and agreed that the joint standing committee should examine the subject. As soon as there is definite information to give, the staff will be advised.

MORE CONTINENTAL TOURS I N the face of strong opposition, the Scottish Licensing Authority has granted a licence to Mr. J. McIntyre, of Aberdeen, to operate six tours to Belgium and France and four tours to FranCe and Switzerland next year.
