Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Telephones incorrectly installed in trucks are causing problems that are potentially dangerous.

This warning comes from Securicor, the co-owner of the Cellnet network. It alleges that "unscrupulous dealers" are installing truck phones in 24 volt systems without vital voltage reducers, merely to cut costs.

Phones are also being connected directly to batteries without the correct fuses; if a fault occurs it can cause complete electrical failure or even fire if the aerial lead becomes live and overheats.

Securicor advises that truck operators choose a reputable installer and that the following requirements are met:

E The cable must come direct from the battery through a voltage regulator to the receiver. The power must be fused immediately next to the battery. E The transceiver must be positioned to avoid vibration, heat and water ingress.

The handset must be installed securely, within sight and easy reach, with all cables tucked away.
