• While the Chinese road accident rate is high, according to a German observer, they are more advanced in some of their road safety regulations than many Western countries — for example, a sideguard on trucks to prevent pedestrians and cyclists from falling under the rear wheels is compulsory. This type of accident causes around 150 deaths on West German roads each year, but the appropriate legislation has yet to be introduced. Verkehrs-Rundschau, September 13.
