Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Less than a week after it finally acquired Birds Eye Walls' distribution business (CM, Oct. 18), the National Freight Consortium has now bought Alpine Refrigerated Deliveries from its joint owners J Lyons and Findus

(UK) — although once again NFC is not saying how much it paid.

AFD has a turnover of some 230 million, employing 500 people in 13 locations. Much of its business is the distribution of frozen foods and icecream for both Findus and Lyons Maid, and it will continue with these activities, as well as supplying services to other manufacturers and retailers.

Alpine, which has a fleet of 250 vehicles, will become a free-standing company within the NFC's Distribution Group, which now has 1,650 vehicles in its fleet.

Like employees in Birds Eye Walls, Alpine staff will he given the opportunity to purchase shares in the employeeowned consortium.

The Alpine purchase was agreed in principle between the two companies earlier this year, and is another step in NFC's plans to increase its activities within the chilled and frozen distribution sector.
