Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

HAVING been involved in the manufacture and sales of demountable equipment over the past ten years and an active member of the Committee set up by SMMT to establish the proposed standards, I must draw the attention of your readers to the two articles concerning demountable systems (CM, September 20).

The first article by Graham Montgomerie (p30) details the proposed standard for straight lift demountable systems but does not refer to the important fact that there are two proposed standards.

The second, suitable for 50 per cent to 60 per cent of existing users, is the pivot and roll system as manufactured by Crane Fruehauf Rigids Limited to the original Pengco design, which will have certain copyrights released to the industry upon approval of the standards by BSI. Graham does refer to the interchangeability between the two standards which can be brought about by modification and adaptations.

The second article worthy of comment is the published list of demountable body builders in the UK (p49). This list can be misleading because, although the companies listed will manufacture bodies for demountable systems, I doubt whether all would design and build a true demountable system as required for taxation purposes with body removable either loaded or unloaded by its own means, or to C and U Regulations which stipulates when defining the legal overall lengths of the container or body on a demountable system that the same condition of loaded or unloaded body removal applies.

There are eight main manufacturers of demountable systems in the UK, some of whom donated the time, expertise and manpower to bring about the proposed standard to the benefit of the industry as a whole. The products of these manufacturers can be identified as genuine demountable systems and promoted as such.
