Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

NEW ROTARY fuel-injection pump for diesel engines has been Toduced by Lucas CAV. The DPS is suitable for high-speed diesels th ratings of up to 22kW (30bhp) per cylinder and has new design 'tures developed for diesel car engines.

CAV's first customer for the the UK diesel car market up to w pump is Volkswagen which fitting it to the latest Golf die1 models. A second Continencustomer will soon be fitting DPS, say Lucas, but a cornnyspokesman would not teal details.

Both the French manufactur

Peugeot and Renault — Jst be potential customers, th Renault having introduced

three new diesel models at Birmingham Show and Peucit taking the lion's share of July this year with 35 per cent of registrations.

One of the main advantages of the new pump is its compact size. At 251mm (9.9in) long with a mechanical governor, it is 149mm (5.9in) shorter than its predecessor, which will continue in production.

Maximum fuelling on the DPS can be pre-set by tamper-proof external adjustment. This enables the pump to be used in conjunction with a boost control for turbocharged engines, and with torque control or altitude compensation where needed.

Another new feature of the DPS design is its one-piece driveshaft which eliminates all backlash points between driving and driven members. Italso allows the bearings to be located wide apart at each end of the shaft, reducing the wear from side loads imposed by the toothed belt drives used for most new diesel car engines.

Bleeding air from the pump after running out of fuel is not necessary with the DPS. It has a valve in its hydraulic head which automatically vents any air trapped between the pumping plungers whenever the engine is cranked over.

While the DPS' first application will be on cars, its specification has been developed to cover all other rotary pump applications including two-, three-, fourand six-cylinder engines of up to 1.6 litre (97.6cuin) per cylinder which require full load delivery of up to 100cumm of fuel per stroke.
