EATON and Brockhouse are combining on a project with Gulf to develop a torque converter/gearbox combination.
The test vehicle is a Seddon Atkinson 400 belonging to Gulf and fitted with a Rolls-Royce 265L engine.
The standard nine-speed gearbox has been replaced with a Brockhouse TCL 17 torque converter coupled to a fivespeed Fuller T0905D gearbox.
This particular box is a fivespeed version of the familiar 9509 unit.
The torque converter has a capacity of around 1500Nm (1100 lbft) and the complete system currently adds about 150 kg (3 cwt) to the kerb weight.
MICHELIN has developed a new lorry tyre — the XZT — designed to cope with the high torque developed by modern diesel engines for on-highway use.
It is a steel-braced radial tyre available initially in 11 — 22.5 to follow soon.
