IT is estimated that the conversion of I Huddersfield's remaining tramways to trolleybus services will cost about R45,000. Alderman Thomas Canby, chairman of the tramways committee, said, last week, that the department was in a strong financial position, and he was certain that, before long, it would be able to recoup the money which would have to be borrowed to carry out this work.
On the routes which had already been converted to trolleybus working there had been an enormous increase in the number of passengers carried. On the Outlane, Lindley and Waterloo section there had been an increase, since trolleyhuses were introduced, of 1,518,146 passengers in 318 days.
METROPOLITAN COMMITTEE FOR A.R.O.
LAST Friday, the Metropolitan Area La Sectional Board for the passenger side of the Associated Road Operators appointed an area committee, comprising Messrs. F. Speight, R. W. Birch,. A. H. Bourne, T. Britten, F. A. Flirt and G. Nowell.
Mr. F. A, Walker, secretary of the passenger side of the Association, is to set up sectional boards for the four, subareas of the Metropolitan Area; and is to take similar action in all the other areas of the country. It is hoped that a sectional board for the North-Western Area will be established within a week.
ABERDEEN BUS-SYSTEM OFFER.
AT a meeting of Aberdeen Transport Committee, it was decided that a recommendation be made that the corporation purchase the Rover bus service for £20,000. The purchase will include, if the proposal be accepted, seven buses and the goodwill of the service, but not the contract vehicles, which the proprietor will operate.
BRIGHTON TO APPEAL AGAINST TILLING GRANT.
RIGHTON Corporation has decided to appeal against the decision of the South Eastern Traffic Commissioners to grant Thos. Tilling, Ltd., permission to run buses from Hove to Rottingdean, via the sea front. The corporation also applied for sanction, under Section 101 of the Road Traffic Act, 1930, for a service along the front, but the Commissioners reserved their decision in this case.
"WATCH" COMMITTEES FOR DURHAM?
A CONFERENCE of local authorities 1-1 in County Durham, last week, decided to appoint a county advisory transport committee to watch over all aspects of road passenger transport in the county. In addition, the local authorities concerned are recommended to set up special committees in their own areas, to keep in touch with transport matters.
Each committee is urged to make representations to the Commissioners on any point at issue, especially where single fares are alleged to be out of all proportion to the return fares charged. The local committees were further recommended to meet operators to ensure that they were paying the proper trade-union rate of wages and emplowing only roadworthy buses, EIGHT MORE SERVICES FOR TRENT CO.?
A PPLICATION is being made to the
East Midland Traffic Commissioners by the Trent Motor Traction Co., Ltd., for the transfer of eight stage-service licences held by Mr. S. 0. Stevenson. The services operate in the Derby area.
