OFparticular interest in the range of Ford and Fordson commercial vehicles for 1936, built by the Ford Motor Co., Ltd., Dagenham, are a new 3-tonner and the Ford Tug mechanical horse unit. Known as model 51, the new 3-tanner is of sturdy design, the pbwer unit being the well-known eightcylindered 30 h.p. type, which develops 81.5 b.h.p. at 3,700 r.p.m. A dry single-plate clutch and four-speed gearbox are provided and a tubular propeller shaft transmits the drive to the spiral-bevel type axle, the torque being taken by torque tube and radius rods.
The well-known Fordson transverse spring is employed at the front, whilst at the rear the suspension is by semielliptics, with helper springs. The brakes are mechanically operated, the drum diameter on all four wheels being 14 ins. The chassis is available in two lengths of wheelbase, the standard model being 13 ft. 1 in., the shorter chassis (10 ft. ll ins.) being particularly suitable for tipping bodies.
Powered by the 8 h.p. four-cylindered unit, the Ford. Tug mechanicalhorse model has been designed to meet the need for a handy distributing unit for 2-ton pay-loads. Transmission is by way of a dry single-plate clutch and four-speed gearbox, through the medium of a tubular propeller shaft to a spiral-bevel axle having three-quarter floating shafts. A torque tube, with radius rods, is provided to take torque and brake reactions.
Transverse springing is employed at the rear, whilst the single front wheel is of the castor type, suspension being effected by a single coil spring mounted at each end on rubber bushes. The Tug is available with a normal drawbar for use with twoor four-wheeled trailers, or with a special quick-release coupling for use with the standard twowheeled trailer of Ford manufacture. The tractor Unit costs £185.
Other new models in the Fordson range include a new 2-ton normal-control chassis, equipped with the eightcylindered engine, and a 15-cwt. van, which is available with either the 30 h.p. eight-cylindered unit or the new and smaller eight-cylindered engine, which is similar in design but is of 2.33 litres capacity, being rated.at 22 h.p. Fordson-Sussex and Fordson-Surrey models have been redesigned and are now equipped with forward control. The new cabs are particularly roomy and a special feature is the provision of a sliding panel in the roof on the driver's side. Both these models are designed for a 4i-ton pay-load.
