Semi-forward Control

FOLLOVIDTG the success of its 3-ton model, Dodge Bros. (Britain), Ltd., recently introduced a new 4-ton chassis, a feature of which is that it has been designed and is built throughout in this country. Weighing under 21, tons unladen, the new model is available in two lengths of wheelbase and is equipped with a six-cylindered petrol engine having a bore and stroke of 82.5 mm. and 111.1 mm. respectively. Rated at 25.35 h.p. the power unit has a maximum output of 70 b.h.p. at 3,000 r.p.m.

The engine is mounted well forward: and all auxiliaries are conveniently located. Semi-forward control has been adopted, and access to the engine and gearbox unit is gained by way of a three-piece cover within the driver's cab, whilst a short bonnet with detachable sides provides access to the front of the engine.

Triangular bracing memberĀ§ give maximum rigidity to the frame and they are carried forward inside the longitndinals to reinforce the frame at its front end and provide the neces c46 sary stiffness to ensure accurate steering.

Transmission is through a 10-in. diameter single-plate clutch to a unit-constructed four-speed gearbox, thence by open two-piece propeller shaft with Hardy-Spicer needle-roller-type universal joints to the fully floating spiral-bevel rear axle. The four-wheel brakes are operated by the Lockheed hydraulic system, and the hand brake also operates on all four wheels through the medium of rods Of straightforward but strong design, the chassis bears evidence of the care which has been taken to ensure easy maintenance, economy of operation and long life, and during the course of a recent road test we found the performance to be of a high order.

Full equipment is provided, the lighting set including dipping headlights, a combined rear and stop light and side and dashboard lights. The starter is of the positive-shift type.
