I N a fine new range of chassis pro duced by Commer Cars, Ltd., Luton, two new 4-5-ton models, each, w.hen fully equipped with cabs and bodies, weighing under 2i tons, are perhaps of outstanding interest. Obtainable in both the normalcontrol and forward-control types, each model is made in two lengths of wheelbase. The power unit in each case is a new six-cylindered side-valve model, having a bore and stroke of 85 mm. and 106 ram. respectively, the maximum b.h.p. being 70.
New features of the engine include a duplicated water inlet and a detachable cylinder head which, internally, is slightly sloped in the direction of the water flow to obviate any tendency to form steam pockets. A Solex Self-Starting carburetter is fitted.
The engine, clutch-pedal operating gear and gearbox are built as a unit, being four-point suspended in the frame. Of the single dry-plate type, the clutch has a diameter of 12 ins. and provision is made -on the fourspeed gearbox for a power take off. Transmission is by means of a twopiece tubular propeller shaft equipped with Layrub universal joints.
Special attentihn ha a been given to the steering 14mA:winch is of sturdy construction and is provided with dust-excluding rubber gaiters for all exposed joints. With a light vehicle of such capacity braking is of vital importance, and on this machine the shoes are of the Bendix Duo-Servo pattern, self-energizing in both directions. A separate operating system is provided for the hand brake, -which also works on all four wheels.
The chassis throughout is of robust construction and the tyre equipment is generous, 34-in. by 7-in, heavyduty pneumatics being fitted all round; twin wheels are used at the rear, Further new models in the Commer range include the N.3, 2-3-tonner, and the N.4, 3-4-tonner, both being available with normal or forward control, The former is made with wheelbase lengths of 10 ft. 6 ins., and 12 ft. 9 ins., and the latter with a 13-ft. 9-in. wheelbase, or in a form suitable for a tipping body with an 11-ft. 9-in. wheelbase. Improvements have been made in appearance, and the lines of these models are particularly attractive.
The six-cylindered power unit, which is common to both models, has a capacity of 3.04 litres and develops 60 b.h.p., whilst other modifications from the previous models of similar load capacity include the incorporation of Hardy-Spicer needle-roller universal joints on the propeller shaft, and a new clutch of larger diameter. The rear axle has also been redesigned to give greater provision against wear of the working parts, and modifications have been made to the steering gear.
